Social Responsibility

Western Areas has a strong commitment to minimise our impact, engage with our key stakeholders and ensure we are operating responsibly in the community.

Western Areas supports various programmes, including sponsorship agreements with the Perth Zoo for the Western Quoll enclosure and Western Shield. Western Areas has recently extended our sponsorship with the Perth Zoo until 2021.

Western Shield is the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions’ lead animal conservation program, and one of the largest wildlife conservation programs ever undertaken in Australia. The program aims to return the balance and mix of native animals in selected areas of WA’s environment to levels comparable to pre-European settlement. Western Areas have committed to sponsoring Western Shield for five years from 2015-2020.

Western Areas has also supported the Eastern Wheatbelt Biosecurity Group for the past 8 years to protect native species in the wheatbelt area by managing declared pests.

While there are no local towns or communities near to Western Areas’ Forrestania operations, the Company actively supports the nearest communities, of Varley, Lake King and Hyden, and continues to develop good relationships with the various Indigenous communities located near the regional exploration programs.

Western Areas has also established excellent relations with the traditional owners and land custodians who live near its Cosmos Nickel Operation and Western Gawler exploration sites.
