Cosmos Nickel Operation
As well as the current in development at the Odysseus mine and the resource definition work under way for that development, the Cosmos Nickel Operation hosts a number of other prospects that are considered highly prospective for nickel sulphide mineralisation.
These include the Neptune prospect, Prospero and additional resources at Odysseus. Further details are available in the latest quarterly reports.
Numerous near-mine and regional targets continue to be advanced across the Forrestania Nickel Belt. A key focus for Western Areas is to ensure that the full potential of the Western Ultramafic Belt (hosting the current operations of Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll along with the advanced New Morning Project) is realised.
The New Morning deposit is a medium grade nickel deposit, lying between the high-grade Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll deposits.
Western Areas continued to advance the New Morning/Daybreak (NMD). Using Western Areas’ patented BioHeap™ process, the ore from the NMD open pit is expected to be heap leached to produce a nickel sulphate solution that can be treated via the MREP sulphide precipitation circuit.
Western Gawler is a prospective greenfield exploration asset, located in South Australia. As well as a 4,450km2 tenement position, an additional strategic agreement with Iluka covers 5070km2. The ground is considered prospective for base and precious metals, primarily hosted in mafic-ultamafic formations.
Mt Alexander Joint Venture (WSA 25% non-contributing interest)
Western Areas is in a Joint Venture with St George Mining. St George is the Manager of the Project and has a 75% interest. Western Areas retains a 25% non-contributing interest in the Project until there is a decision to mine.
St George Mining Limited has reported high-grade nickel sulphide intersections drilled at the Cathedral prospect.
