What We Do

The Cosmos Nickel Operation is located 30km north of Leinster. Cosmos lies in the heart of the prolific Leinster-Wiluna nickel camp, home to many high-quality deposits such as Mt Keith, Cliffs, Perseverance, Rocky’s Reward, Honeymoon Well, Venus and Yakabindie.

Western Areas has Australia’s highest grade nickel mines and is a low unit cash cost producer. Its main asset is the 100% owned Forrestania nickel projects, located 400km east of Perth in Western Australia. Western Areas is also Australia’s second largest sulphide nickel miner producing approximately 22,000 to 25,000 nickel tonnes in ore per annum from its Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll mines – two of the lowest cost and highest-grade nickel operations in the world.

Western Areas’ is currently developing the Company’s third nickel mine at the Odysseus Mine at the Cosmos Nickel Operation.

Flying Fox is Western Areas first producing underground mine and remains one of the highest grade nickel mines in the world. Production commenced in 2006, and the underground mine now operates at depths of over 1km underground.

Spotted Quoll is Western Areas’ second mine and was discovered in October 2017, as a result of Western Areas ongoing investment in regional and near-mine exploration.

The high-grade nickel ore mined from Forrestania is processed through the Cosmic Boy Concentrator (CBC) and sold into offtake agreements with Jinchuan Group, China’s largest stainless steel producer and BHP Ni West.
