Western Areas acquired the Cosmos Nickel Operation from Xstrata Nickel Australasia in 2015.

The decision to purchase Cosmos was counter-cyclical but presents significant brownfields growth opportunity for the Company and provides significant upside both from exploration and a new mining operation, as soon with the Mine.

Cosmos will be the catalyst for new nickel production in WA, particularly as Class 1 nickel sulphides in the battery and EV market is forecast to grow over the coming years.

Since 2015, the Company has embarked on numerous exploration campaigns, including geophysics and drilling.

The Cosmos Nickel Operation is located 30km north of Leinster. Cosmos lies in the heart of the prolific Leinster-Wiluna nickel camp, home to many high-quality deposits such as Mt Keith, Cliffs, Perseverance, Rocky’s Reward, Honeymoon Well, Venus and Yakabindie. Identified in 2010, Odysseus was the most recent discovery in a string of successes at Cosmos which include high grade deposits at Cosmos, Cosmos Deeps, Prospero, Tapinos, AM1, AM2, AM4 and Odysseus North Massive Sulphide, and medium grade deposits at AM5 and AM6.  Between 2000 and 2012, the Cosmos Operation produced over 127kt of nickel in concentrate at an average head grade of 4.8% nickel.

Western Areas’ is currently developing the Company’s third nickel mine at the Odysseus Project at the Cosmos Nickel Operation.
