What We Do

Odysseus

Western Areas’ is currently developing the Company’s third nickel mine at the Odysseus Mine at the Cosmos Nickel Operation.

A definitive feasibility study on the Odysseus deposit has been completed, and additional work is under way to bring in further deposits (AM5/AM6) to the production profile. Odysseus will become the Company’s third mining operation, an early works program has already commenced to return the project to development ready status.

The Odysseus DFS work has yielded a number of positive outcomes, most importantly a larger project than initially expected with a longer mine life beyond ten years.

Odysseus is one of the only nickel sulphide projects that will be coming into production in a timeframe that will enable it to deliver into a growing demand profile we see globally, particularly for nickel rich electric vehicle (EV) batteries, that is signaling a looming shortage of nickel sulphide products in the market.

Odysseus will utilise a shaft hoisting system, which is justified based on a 10-year operating life and throughput averaging around 900,000 tonnes per annum. The shaft hoisting operation uses a top-down mining approach, rather than a bottom-up method and will generate substantial savings in ore transportation costs, as well as a reduction in mine development capital expenditure.

The Odysseus Mine sits on a granted mining lease that is part of the high-grade Cosmos Nickel Operation that lies 30km north of Leinster
